Celebrate Banned Books Week

According to the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF), more than a book a day faces removal from free and open public access in U.S. schools and libraries. During Banned Books Week, September 29 - October 6, 2007, thousands of libraries and bookstores throughout the nation will celebrate a democratic society's most basic freedom -- the freedom to read.

No matter what the topic is, I can't imagine banning a book. While there are hundreds of books written on topics that I do not agree with or want to read about, it is every one's right to express themselves or read how they wish. (Obviously I mean within legal limits)

Some of the books on the list I just do not understand. I think almost every Judy Bloom book besides the Fudge series, is on the list. (I mean really, Deenie? Tiger Eyes? Are they against all books that anyone with estrogen or progesterone may like?) And books like The Outsiders (one of my fave of all times) Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, To Kill a Mockingbird, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, A Light in the Attic (oops guess I shouldn't have bought this for Chris) and Catcher in the Rye also top the list.

So this week here is my challenge. Look at the list. Pick one (or two or three) and read them. Isn't there something thrilling about going against a ban or challenge. Emily just started The Outsiders and is loving it. (yes Jamie I am going to pop that movie in soon!)

"Get Hooked on a Banned Book." I dare you.

I'm right there with ya... some of these books I just don't understand. Catcher in the Rye and To Kill a Mockingbird are two of my favorites.
A Light in the Attic blew my mind. I can't imagine what is "challenging" about this book, plus many of the others on the list.

I may not be able to read one of the books this week, but I will be picking one to put on my fall reading challenge list.
Thanks for sharing!!! :)

I just don't understand banned books! Who's banned them? Why have I read half those books if they are banned?!

Off to check the list...

Crazy! The Outsiders, Judy Blume. I learned about life from them!
