ToTo we aren't in Kansas anymore!

When people ask me what I will miss the most when I move back to the states, I love to see the look on their face when I tell them my ToTo toilet.

Japan has two type of toilets -- the "squat" and the "sit".  Or as better known here as "Western style" and "Japanese Style".

A squatty potty (Japanese style) is exactly like it sounds. There is quite a learning curve and the ability to do a good kegel is a bonus. When we first moved here I avoided them at all cost. Now they really are no big deal. (Not to mention in many places they are the only option so you have to get used to them)

Then you have the "Western style".  Quite often these toilets are full of bells and whistles. Apparently Japanese toilet engineers think Westerners really like to pamper their behinds. Some of the toilets have an automatic lid open when you walk within so many feet. Many have sensors, heated seats, wash settings and even a dryer. There is nothing better than sitting on a heated toilet at 2 am in December.

Who would have thought there would be so many controls to go to the bathroom! (I have translated each control, but as you will see there is a bidet, soft wash, butt wash and a dryer. If you click on the picture you can get a better read.)

Yes, the toilet needs to be plugged in.

Many public restrooms with Western toilets have music and flush sound buttons to "mute" any noise. I always seem to press these buttons instead of the flush button.  Some restrooms even have a computerized system stating which stalls are occupied and empty.

Really, who would have thought going to the bathroom could be so fun! Now if I could only figure out a way for ToTo to come home with us.

I just stumbled upon your blog, and it makes me homesick for Japan! I just returned to the states in November, and I have to agree with you-I miss the toilets! I wandered around Home Depot just looking for a toilet with a heated seat and was sorely disappointed with the American selection. :(
