Batting Down the Hatches

Looks like we are in for some nasty weather the next few days as Super Typhoon Melor heads our way. As of right now the storm keeps moving back and forth from a Kansai (where we live) to a Tokyo landfall. Regardless, as of right now accuweather is predicting 6.06 inches of rain over the next 36 hours with high winds and possible flash flooding.

I'm not too worried as Kobe is located in a bay, and our area is pretty developed (although we do live right at the mountain so there may be flooding from there). However the US State Department issued a statement via email this morning that makes me a wee bit more cautious.

U.S. citizens should carry their travel documents at all times (i.e. U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate, picture IDs, etc.) or secure them in safe, waterproof locations. We also suggest that American citizens contact friends and family in the United States with updates about their whereabouts.

We had two tropical storms come through our area while living in NC so this can't be much worse. I think the part that makes it seem uncertain is that we have no way of knowing what the TV and radio are saying. All we can understand are the Japanese QVC channels and infomercials selling things like mortgage life insurance rates, both of which will not get us very far in daily life.

So in the meantime I will watch out for the shi shi's (wild boars) flocking down the mountain and I will dig through our swim gear for those extra snorkels and flippers –– just in case.

Fun in the Sun

Lately I feel like I am a mouse running on a wheel for piece of cheese, but unable to catch it so I keep running. End of the school year is always busy. Field trips, end of the year testing, breakfasts and special lunches, clearing out the classrooms, graduation... add to that PTA meetings, Booster Club meetings, gymnastics 4 days a week, baseball, softball, Matt traveling and having extra meetings, and it is no wonder I feel like I am constantly going these days. I also have been watching my neighbor's four-year-old and nine-year-old for the past 5 days while their parents have been out of town to a California bed and breakfast. And looking ahead to the summer I don't see much of a slowdown between the kids, practices, trips planned and two new projects I was sent an email about today.

Matt was out of town over the weekend, so Shannon decided to drive over from South Carolina to go with me and my small pack of children to the beach on Sunday. It was nice to actually sit and enjoy the weather for a day, even if I did read only 5 pages of my book. I am so blessed to live close enough to the beach for day trips.

Sam loves the beach.
Emily and Madison (my neighbor's daughter)
Chris hitting the waves.
Sam and Jack (mu neighbor's son) testing the water.
Chris and Jack pose for the camera.
Sam and David (Shannon's son) ready to swim.
Shannon and I take time to "say cheese"
Emily doing what she does everywhere we go –– gymnastics!

Swim Fun

The kids have had a blast swimming in the indoor and yes, even the outdoor (don't worry mom, it's heated) pool. Tomorrow we are hoping to hit the beach for a while.
