700 And Counting

That is the number of fiction books alone I have on my shelves. Seven HUNDRED. And that doesn't include any non-fiction, devotional or "self help" type books. And of those 700, I have read only 264. Yikes. No wonder Matt gets aggravated every time I bring home more books.

So I admit it. I am addicted to books. But how can I not? I live to read. I could have worse addictions, right? I don't smoke, do drugs and only drink socially. I am not a big shopper, I don't buy fancy things nor drive a fancy car. I just live for my books.

So some may ask why do I hang on to the 264 that I have read? I'm not totally sure. I have certain authors that I must read every book as they come out, and those I just cannot part with. And yes I know there is the library, but I hate waiting for a book and there is just something special about actually owning it. And those I may actually reread, or so that is what I tell my husband. And the others, while some were just so-so, getting rid of them would be like getting rid of a part of my family.

Today I alphabetized my bookshelves and made sure all my books were cataloged on my computer. I did find 10 books to take to the used book store. And well, I admit, half of those are books that somehow I bought doubles. But it is a start, right? I realized my books are already 3 deep on two giant Ikea bookshelves. Any more and I will be having to put an addition on to the house just for books.

So all you book addicts, please tell me I am not alone. Please tell me that others have this weird addiction to owning books. And if not, someone lie. At least it will make me feel better.

I enjoy reading but prefer to borrow them from our local library. The ones that I own I've been slowly swapping them at Paperback Swap, FrugalReader.com and Book Moochie.

I'm with you here. Now, most of mine are kids books (I think over 2000 last count) because I plan on home schooling (and I did plan on being a teacher). I still have probably 200 to 300 "adult" books. I have read probably about 50% of my books though. And yes, my husband does groan when I come home with a new book. Although he is also supportive...he let me go to Border's and spend $150 on whatever I wanted for Christmas. :D

Count me in! Not sure how many books I have, I'll count as I pack them. But, like you, I prefer to buy a book rather than check it out of the library. I love to reread books and have read every book I own (well, except the ones I haven't gotten to yet!) at least twice. And I can't get rid of any of them. Dh forbids me to go to our company's annual book sale. Literally tens of thousands of books, all for 25 cents each. I could go completely nuts! So from one book lover to another, enjoy your own personal library! What if the apocalypse happened and you were trapped in your house for months? At least you'd have something to read. :p

You are not alone in your book addiction! I don't have 700 books on our shelves, but I'll count 'em soon! :)
Like you, I want to own the book, not just rent it from the library. And, like you, there are certain authors that I have to read everything they write, over and over and over again. So, buying the book is completely necessary!
My dream house would have a library in it with ceiling to floor bookcases on 3 walls, one wall full of windows and big cozy chairs to curl up in and read.
Oh, I don't know if I even mentioned this, but you were right- Karen Kingsbury's books have changed my life! :)

Well I am very much left in the dust with my mere 289 books. I have only read about...35% of them maybe. Hehe but I am reading more of them since you moved and are not being a book pusher to my addiction anymore.

I am with you on this. I have a TON of books in the house. There are two 6 foot tall by 4 foot wide bookcases full, there is one 7 foot tall by 4 foot wide, then there are a couple more. I am on a self-imposed no book-buying period until June. I am trying to read some of these stacks. If you get a chance, I would like for you to make a little trip over here to TN and alphabetize my books for me.

Have a great day!
Kim
